Dean cleared the top of the nearest hill and ducked behind an outcropping of rock. He hated to leave Amanda in his cabin all alone, but she needed to rest. And he needed to plan. How could he tell her that he was a shifter? That a bear did save her from the river and it was him? He hadn’t a clue.

Amanda was beautiful and tough and smart. Everything the man in him wanted for a wife and everything his bear wanted as a mate. She was the one for him. But what if she turned him down? What if she discovered his secret and ran? It was a risk he’d just have to take. If he brought back her camera…maybe she’d figure it out on her own. Look at the photos of his bear, jump to conclusions. A long shot, but better than none.

He tugged off his shirt, jeans—everything—and set it all in a pile on top of an exposed rock. He’d have much better luck sniffing out her camera as a bear. With his eyes closed, he cleared his mind and let his animal take over. Fingers turned into claws, palms into paws, body into fur-covered beast. In a moment, Dean was gone and his bear stood in his place. A sniff of the air, a glance around, and off he went on the hunt.

A few minutes later and he was splashing through the water, chasing down the remnants of her trail and searching for her camera. As the river narrowed and began to curve, he spotted it. Muddy and wet and lodged between two rocks. But still there. Yes! He lumbered up to it and tugged it free before biting the strap. He held it between his teeth and turned for home. Halfway there, he smelled danger.

Another grizzly and not a shifter. A large male by the scent of him. At this time of year, the regular bears were waking up. Hungry, sometimes disoriented. Always fierce. He picked up the pace, bounding up the hillside toward his cabin when he heard her scream. He roared in response, the human No! inside his head transforming into a grizzly growl. No animal was going to hurt her. Not when he’d just saved her from the river.

Faster and faster he pushed his four limbs until he neared the top of the final hill. He dropped the camera and bounded over the crest. Shit. She’d come outside despite his warnings. And now a giant male grizzly stood between her and the front steps, huffing and snarling. Bad. So bad. Dean hated to fight. He’d do it to protect Amanda, his mom, anyone he cared about. But he wished it could end another way. Unfortunately, the animal side never saw reason.

He roared his warning and the big grizzly turned his head. But he didn’t back down. The fur on its back rippled and Dean wasted no time. He’d catch him off guard, fight him out of the area. Charging down the hill, he picked up speed with the descent.
